Dewey "Curtis" Rakes, 79, of Eden passed away on Thursday, July 10, 2025, at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, July 14, 2025, at 2pm at Boone and Cooke Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1 until 2 pm at the funeral home and other times at 1663 Bethlehem Church Road, Reidsville, NC.
Curtis was born in Reidsville on July 12, 1946, a son of Theordore Roosevelt Rakes and Bertie Hooper Rakes, both deceased. He was the owner of Triple R Home Improvements. He was a true conservationist. He loved the land and water. He was an avid fisherman most of his adult life, he fished semi pro on the FLW and Redman Circuit. He won the Sports Afield Distinguished Angler Award in 1983. He coached kids sports and was the owner of his softball team. He loved riding motorcycles and in his younger years he raced them. He had a real passion for shooting pool and taught pool lessons. After he moved to Bugs Island, he became the install coordinator for Lowes Home Improvement and later a floor installer at Home Depot.
Curtis is survived by his wife, Jan Soyars Rakes of the home; his children, Dean Rakes and wife, Devita "Dee" of Eden and Terri Rakes of Reidsville; his sister, Patsy Wilson of Reidsville; his grandchildren, Beth Ashburn and husband, T.J., Krista Hash and husband, Lance, Joshua Swain and wife, Jessica, Tyson Rakes, Tucker Rakes, Jakob Thill and Hayley Cruise and his great grandchildren, Lilly, Harper, Hartley and Roman.
In addition to his parents, Curtis was preceded in death by his siblings, Arlin Rakes, James Rakes, Ed Rakes, Ronnie Rakes and Barbara Shough.
