Obituary

It is with great love and cherished memories that we celebrate the life of a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. 

James was a man who enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, especially family, fishing, and hunting. His family was always an important part of his and he treasured the time he spent with those he loved. He was a member of the Masonic Bula 0409 lodge in Burlington, NC.

During his working years, he proudly served as a member of the NOrth Carolina State Highway Patrol, dedicating 30 years of service to the people of North Carolina. He graduated from the 33rd Basic Patrol School in 1965 at the Institute of Governemtn in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. 

He began his career in Jacksonville, North Carolina, and later spent 10 years serving in Burlington, North Carolina, where he was honored as Tropper of the Year, recognizing his dedication and commitment to serving others. He completed the final five years of his career at the North Carolina State Highway Patrol Headquarters in Raleigh before retiring.

After retiring from the Highway Patrol, he opened a custom frame shop in Carolina Beach, North Carolina. His creativity, hard work, and friendly nature made the shope a special part of his retirement years.

He later lived in Alaska for 15 years, embracing the beauty, adventure, and unique experience that Alaska had to offer. His love of travel continued throughout his life. He traveled to all 50 states as well as throughout Europe. These journeys gave him countless wonderful memories and stories to share with his family and friends. 

He was preceded in death by his mother, Sadie Chilton Corns, his father, James Andrew Axsom, his brother, Mike Axsom, and his grandson, James Daniel Axsom. 

He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Linda Walker Axsom; his son, James Keith Axsom; his sister, Linda Corns; his brother, Roger Axsom; his grandchildren, Kristen A. Mcguire, Kourie A. Underwood, and Mary Megan Axsom; his great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Underwood, Gracie McGuire, AIden Underwood, Caroline McGuire, and Kimber Efland; his great-great-grandson, Enzo Underwood; and ,any other relatives and friends who will forever cherish his memory. 

Above all, his greatest joy was his family. He will be remembered for his love of family. dedication to his community, adventurous spirit, love of travel, and the many lives he touched along the way.

Though he is no longer with us, the memories he created and the love he gave will live on through his family for generations to come. 

A graveside service will be held at Dan View Cemetery on October 3, 2026 at 2:00pm. The cemetery can be found at S.Fieldcrest Rd, Eden, NC, 27288.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in memory of James to Ancora Compassionate Care.

Rest in peace. Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure, and you will be deeply missed.
