Mary Vaughan Shelton, 79, formerly of Stoneville passed away on Monday, August 28, 2023 at UNC Rockingham Health Care.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 3 pm Saturday, Sept. 2, 2023 at Deep Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family will receive friends after the service.

Mary was born in Bassett, Virginia, on April 24, 1944, a daughter of John "Whitey" Vaughan and Carrie Hodge Vaughan, both deceased.  She formerly worked for Baxter Kelly.  She enjoyed fishing at Bugg's Island.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Jackie Shelton; her son, Joe Ray Carter, Jr.; and her grandson, Adam J. Purgason.

Mary is survived by her children, Mary "Sissy" Carter, Jeffrey Dean Carter, Walter "Pokey" Shelton and Karrie S. Dillon; her sister, Joan Tuttle; her brother, Johnny Vaughan; her grandchildren, Christin, Gary, Bradley, Jacob, Sarah, and Mattie; and her great grandchildren, Macy, Kip, Kai, Tanner, August, Ella, Arya and Declan.
