Obituary

Posey Ray Thomas Jr, lovingly known as "Ray" age 78, passed away peacefully at home on February 1. 2026. He was born on September 4th, 1947 in Eden North Carolina, where his roots ran deep and where his life's work, love, and legacy were built.

Ray was very definition of strong willed, steadfast, determined; and unshakable in what he believed in and who he loved.

He was honest, outspoken yet genuine, witty and clever, with a quiet thoughtfulness that showed in his actions more than his words. Ray worked hard and took pride in doing things the right way. He had a gift for teaching others and leading by example.

Ray graduated from Morehead High School and was later drafted into the United States Army, where proudly served during the Vietnam War. A defining chapter that shaped his lifelong dedication to his family and his country. After returning home, he devoted 40 years to Duke Power, working faithfully until retirement. Carrying the same work ethic and commitment into every role he held.

He is survived by his daughters and family who meant everything to him; Jeanette and son-in-law Jerry Haymore, Abbie Walker, and his extra daughter Sherrie Slaughter; daughter in-law Carlon Chumley; his sister Marie Philpott; and the mother of his children, Sandra Thomas. His Grandchildren; Heather and Kenny Elmore, Jeremy Chumley, Chelsey and Randall Overby, Austin and Destiny Walker, and his treasured great grandchildren; Cheyenne, Mason, Sawyer, Brady, Asher, Nolan, Jax, and Waylon. He also leaves behind his faithful companions who were never far from his side. His dog Case, his horse Skinny, and his grand dogs Sak and Shine, each a part of his life, he loved so dearly.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Tiny and Posy Ray Thomas Sr; his son Todd Chumley, his brother Ted Thomas; and his brother in-law Ben Philpott.

A graveside service will be held at 2 pm on Friday, February 6, 2026 at Woodlawn Cemetery.
