Richard Brian Welborn, 87, of Stoneville passed away on Thursday, December 30, 2021 at Gibson House.

A funeral service will be held at 4 pm Saturday, January 1, 2022 at Providence Baptist Church.  The family will receive friends from 3 until 4 pm before the service at the church and other times at the residence.  A private family interment will be held on Sunday.

Richard was born in Guilford County on March 19, 1934, a son of Mary Ruth Welborn.  He was a retired school teacher after teaching in several school systems in North Carolina and Virginia.  He was a park ranger for Philpott Dam.  He spent his retirement volunteering for the Salvation Army, driving cancer patients to treatments and coaching in all sports in the community.   He was a member of Providence Baptist Church where he served as Sunday School teacher and grounds keeper.

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Iseley Welborn.

Richard is survived by his children, Gayland Welborn (Cile) of Asheville, Tracey Welborn (Cathy) of Richmond, VA, Melissa Smith (Johnny) of Stoneville, Bess Marley (Rick) of Asheboro and Ritchie Shumate of Prince George, VA; his grandchildren, Zach Welborn (Caitlin), Claire Haadad, Robbie Smith (Angela Cook), Sam Welborn, Danny Welborn, Chad Marley (Tracey), Misty McPeek (Jason), Joshua Shumate, Daniel Shumate; and his great grandchildren, Oliver Welborn, Ruthie Welborn, J.J. Welborn, Frankie Welborn, Cameron Smith, Brody Smith, Anna Marley, Avery Marley, Isaiah Davis, Ethan Lineberry, Paxton Burns, Bella Burns, Jayda McPeek and Talyn McPeek.
