Robert Melvin Joyce, 85, passed away peacefully at his home in Danville, VA on August 10, 2026.

Born on August 17, 1940, in Rockingham County, North Carolina, Robert was the son of the late Robert W. Joyce and Pauline (Page) Joyce. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force before beginning a life centered on learning, creativity and quiet contentment.

Robert was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carolyn (Reese) Joyce, in 2004. He had a lifelong appreciation for music of all kinds, movies and American history, with a particular fascination for the Civil War. An avid reader, he also enjoyed painting small crafts and traveling to destinations throughout the United States. Though a simple man by nature, Robert possessed a remarkable intellect, and his thoughtful conversations will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

He leaves behind his special friend, Jean; his devoted best friend, James David Gillie, who became like a son to him in recent years; and his compassionate caregiver, LeTara McCain, whose kindness and support enriched his final chapter.

On Robert's behalf, his estate wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Commonwealth Hospice of Danville, especially his nurse, Angelica Franchini, RN. Through her compassionate care, attentiveness and unwavering commitment, Robert's wish to remain in the comfort of his own home through the end of his life became a reality. He was deeply appreciative of the exceptional care he received and often remarked that he was treated as though he were family.

In accordance with Robert's wishes, a private burial service will be held, where he will be laid to eternal rest beside his beloved Carolyn.

His memory will live on in the hearts of those fortunate enough to have known him.
