Sarah "Jan" Herbison Walker, 66, of Stoneville passed away on Sunday, March 13, 2022 at UNC Chapel Hill.
A memorial service will be held at 4 pm Monday, March 21, 2022 at Boone & Cooke Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends from 3 until 4 pm Monday before the service at the funeral home and will be displaying her artwork in her honor.
Jan was born in Eden, NC (Leaksville), the daughter of Dorothy Willis Herbison and Peter J. Herbison, Sr., both deceased.
She grew up as a member of the "Norman Drive Gang", as it was affectionately called in her neighborhood, attended King Memorial Baptist Church, Burton Grove Elementary, Intermediate, Holmes and Morehead High Schools. She later moved her membership to Fieldcrest Road Church of God.
Jan loved to travel. She and her husband, Charles, took many trips on their motorcycle with their group to North Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee. She enjoyed camping and fishing at Blues Lake, Buggs Island and Reidsville Lake.
Jan retired from Frontier Spinning in 2015, She was then able to get back to her love for art. She created jewelry, paintings and loved to sew.
Her favorite to recreate was Van Gogh's Starry Night. She was honored to do a mural for Tri City Kia and a Starry Night themed chair for a charity auction at the Art Club of Rockingham County.
Jan leaves behind her husband of 44 years, Charles and her beloved pet cat, Key Key of the home; her daughter, Tracy Johnson of Eden; her son, Steve Wilson Walker (April) of Navarre, FL; her step sons, David Walker of Mebane, Bryan Walker of Bassett, VA and Bruce Walker of Bassett, VA; her grandchildren, Daniel Humble, Jerrell Humble, Derrick Walker, Jeremiah Humble and Sean Walker; her step grandchildren, Hunter Walker and Courtney Walker; her great grandson, Drake River Humble and two step great granddaughters on the way; her sister, Shelia Martin (Ricky) of Stoneville, nephews Kevin Martin (Amy) of Stoneville and Joshua Martin (Kristen) of Stoneville and 12 great nieces and nephews; and her special friend, Wendy Jones.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandson, Cameron Drake Johnson.
The family would like to send a special thanks to her sister-in-law, Linda Walker for helping with wound care as well as UNC Chapel Hill.
Anyone who has any of her artwork is invited to bring it to the service for display. It may be brought to Boone & Cooke Funeral Home between 9 am and 12 pm Monday before the service and will be immediately returned after the service.
Family and friends are welcome to meet throughout the weekend at the home of her sister, Shelia, at 612 Young Road, Stoneville.
